What's Left for Superhero Films?

Dominic Corry:

In Wednesday's blog about what Peter Jackson should do next, I said that "the superhero genre now feels like it has very few surprises left". That statement should've come with the caveat that I am very excited to Zack Snyder's 2013 Superman film Man of Steel, for which a fantastic full-length trailer has just been released.

I find pretty much everything in that trailer encouraging. Even the shaky-cam stuff. The mythic aspects of the character really come through, and I'm intrigued by how much it appears to be a departure from Snyder's typically glossy and slow-motion-centric style.

While it remains an interesting failure, Bryan Singer's Superman Returns from 2006 fails to qualify as any sort of definitive modern interpretation in the way The Dark Knight trilogy does for Batman, so it feels like the contemporary Superman niche has yet to be properly tapped.

Also see what Thomas Jane did with his short film of The Punisher, I'd like Marvel to let someone do his movie correctly for once.

I can't tell if the article is contradicting or not. At one point he is complaining about Guardians of the Galaxy being low key, and then saying "well I want something different." If you ask me, Guardians of the Galaxy IS different.

A lot of people are excited about it actually. I also think they should keep diving into the depths to find something not so main stream. Expand their comic book interests. Thats why I like The Avengers, they are able to throw in other characters that normally wouldn't stand on their own, then you get interested, and then they could get their own movie.

If Marvel were to say "Black Widow Movie!" before the whole Avengers thing, non-comic book fans would go "who? oh....cool....I guess" Now its "Dude I want to see her movie!"

This is one thing I think WB is doing well. Sure they suck at getting the main heroes out, but a lot of the smaller DC Comics and Dark Horse comics are making it big. Sin City for example. or The Watchmen.
