Given the 'we' portion of that one, I'd say the article creator is a black man honestly delivering his opinion on the topic (and his posture/tone of that answer displays self-restraint to me).

I'm not sure what else to tell except that racism will still be alive and pervasive with or without this opinion piece. Heck, it's impossible to imagine Red Tails, featuring an all-black group of pilots for most of the film, happening had Lucas not have his own independent production company. There's a very slight chance Hollywood would've ever bitten on that by itself, and this piece is trying to explain the why of that.

I don't really see much of an offense there. The Racial Empathy Gap is used to bolster that context. ie I'm not black, making it tougher to directly relate with X black protagonist, leaving me with a greater possibility of not liking it. His evidence is bolstered but the behind-the-scenes screening of "Nothin' but a Man."

You've already brought this quote up. As you can see from my previous example (Red Tails) or simply looking at the stats for black main characters in film OUTSIDE of their use for stereotypical jokes and such is rather slim. That "offensive" statement would be regarded as a stern, honest stance by most movie critics.
