Rian Johnson on Whether He'd Be Interested in the Batman Reboot

Flickering Myth

With the release of The Dark Knight Rises bringing the curtain down on Christopher Nolan 'Dark Knight Trilogy' earlier this year, Warner Bros. is now faced with the unenviable task of finding a new director to pick up the mantle of the Bat and launch the next chapter of The Dark Knight's illustrious screen career.

I think it might be pretty good if he were to jump on this project.

I just hope it has a bit lighter tone, perhaps a batman we can understand when he talks. It doesn't need to be super dark. Especially if its bridging into Justice League.

please be super dark. it is the main reason this one carried so much.

It shouldn't have a lighter tone. Any lighter and it would be scooby doo. Nolan's Batman had the perfect atmosphere. BUT... It shouldn't be so grounded on reality. I'd love to see Solomon Grundy, Clayface, Hush, Killer Croc and all those would never happen in Nolan's series. The next Batman films should look towards Rocksteady's Arkham games for inspiration. They really nailed the Batman universe beautifully.

I like the idea of a dark Batman movie that still has the surreal elements of the comics. I liked Nolan's more realistic take on the Batman franchise, but there were many things from the comics that just wouldn't have worked in his movies, and I think it would be pretty cool to see some of Batman's more unreal elements on the big screen next time around. Shake things up a bit, you know?

The Arkham Asylum/City games did a great job of mixing darkness/grittiness with the tones of the comics, and imo it would be pretty cool to see something like that on the big screen.

To me Rocksteady isn't as dark as Nolans and thats what I want. I also think taking the "realistic" tone out of it will help a ton, as you said.

I just don't want emo batman anymore, and more importantly I want him to focus on his detective skills more than his fighting skills (like Rocksteady and the cartoons do)

With his past experiences with Levitt, he could essentially reboot the franchise but with a slight continuation from what Nolan left off.

Though, in my opinion, I would live to see Batman Beyond, a fresh new take for Batman movies.
