What was initially a financial failure has turned into a cult classic and is now heralded as an imperfect but still classic film. A lot has changed since ’98; writer Hunter S. Thompson committed suicide in 2005, Aaron Eckhart became a star even though no one can show me in box office receipts why, and Johnny Depp went from being a former teen heartthrob to being a current teen heartthrob with his Pirates of the Caribbean films. One thing that hasn’t changed is Johnny Depp’s dedication to the work’s of Hunter S. Thompson as he steps in front of the camera for the second time to play the leading role in an adaptation of one of his works.

... didn't the same thing happen with Fear and Loathing, getting poor reviews but slowly building a following/fanbase?

It might be crap, and I certainly won't be buying a theaterticket to watch it, but will one day check it out.
