Stan Lee Weighs In On Making Spider-Man Bisexual

CB: The Amazing Spider-Man 1 &2 star Andrew Garfield recently made headlines when he suggested turning Mary Jane into a guy and making Spider-Man either gay or bisexual. At Fandomfest in Louisville, Kentucky this weekend, Stan Lee was asked his opinion about Andrew Garfield’s idea.

Personally, I like Tobey more than Andrew.

ScepticTankAvenger3916d ago

All Tobey did was cry and yell Mary Jane a whole lot. I liked the movies, but I never felt he was right as Spider-Man.

iamnsuperman3915d ago

He was an emotionless corpse who just so happened to cry but you didn't believe it. Tobey was young. I think if he did it now he would be quite good but the acting he did was horrible.

coolbeans3915d ago (Edited 3915d ago )

Macquire was creeping into his mid-30's the time Spiderman 3 rolled around. :/

And I disagree, I thought he pulled off the plain-then-appropriately-emoti onal-at-the-right-time nerd he was typically tasked with being.

TheHergulaX3915d ago

Tobey might be a better Peter Parker but Andrew Garfield smoked Tobey as Spidey in just one film.

It is a preference thing, of course, but personally I prefer Andrew Garfield, even though he is too cool as Peter Parker, but near perfection as Spidey.

RetrospectRealm3915d ago

Alright, no. All I was saying was I preferred Tobey to Andrew. Andrew is perfectly fine as a Peter Parker. He's not too cool, this is a modern take on Spider-Man. Like Marc Webb said, nerds aren't nerds anymore in today's world. He acts and looks exactly how a nerd would act and look in today's world.

TheHergulaX3915d ago

Well, you're right, and I agree, but at the end of the day it is all about preference. But I still feel that Andrew looks physically, clothing style and everything, too cool in the film. But that's simply how I took it.

Good response from Stan Lee. Why would changing his sexuality even have to come up?

coolbeans3915d ago

That's what's tough for me to follow as well. You've already played one movie with Spidey following the established canon, so why bother changing that for the sake of pandering?

RetrospectRealm3915d ago

I think Andrew was just saying that. Not that he literally wanted to push it forward in happening.

coolbeans3915d ago

@Retrospect

True, he wasn't "pushing" (in the way I think you're intending it) it unto the writers/producers, but honestly talking about it when the subject was brought up.

Theyre saving that card for Human Torch

Some roles can be played by any actor of any race. Doesn't have to follow comic book doctrine to the letter. As long as everything is taken into consideration for example if you made Peter Parker Asian then it follows that we must see Spidey and Peter through Asian sensibilities and way of being. Even if he was "american".
As a creative person, writers, directors actors. These parts offer lots of interesting ideas and situations to play with.

All this being said, some roles would not benefit from genre or race change because viewers may not connect with story due to these drastic changes.

It a shame really, prejudice and judgement run deep in our fibers and its never more apparent than when discussing our favorite heroes.

sjaakiejj3915d ago

SPOILER:

Already happened when Peter Parker died in the comics.

MilkMan3915d ago

Making Spidey bi and Mary Jane turn to Marv J?
If they can pull that off then whatever millions it makes it deserves. A movie like that will illustrate to the general public if we have in fact moved on from the Uber-man (Arnold, Sylvester and Bruce's) to now the bi-sexual, confused and emotional men.

Lord_Sloth3915d ago (Edited 3915d ago )

I only want my superhero movies to illustrate entertainment to me. I don't want political statements and attention grabs. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

After all the flak that One More Day got just for breaking the couple up, think of how much they'd catch if they reversed MJ's plumbing!
