Why White People Don't Like Black Movies

IndieWire

To get to the short explanation of this loaded assertion I have to narrowly define what I mean by “Black” movies. Black movies are those films with a majority Black cast that situate Whites, if any, in peripheral or non-influential roles. No matter what the genre and no matter what the race of the director, these kinds of Black films, we are told, form a niche market within the broader domestic U.S. market and are but a tiny fraction of the Global film marketplace. Now that I’ve established this narrow definition we can explore a brief series of questions beginning with the assertion that is the title of this piece.

How are racist articles like this even allowed on Newsboiler? I mean, I feel literally offended by this entire article, and hope it does not get approved.

No offense to Crazay though.

Crazay3925d ago

No I just found it to be a rather interesting topic/talking point. Which is why I posted it to begin with.

Report it and it will fail. I tried, but I can't because I haven't submitted any stories.

I contacted Newsboiler, they have not yet responded.

I honestly don't see what the hubbub is about. The description above clarifies the intention of the title and the piece details racial studies made by universities and other experiences to dive into the topic.

QUOTE - "A vast majority of White people don’t like Black movies because they lack the empathy necessary to identify with Black characters which in turn affects their ability to “suspend disbelief” and surrender to the narrative of a Black film. "

QUOTE - "Why do Black people like White movies?
The short answer here is that we don’t have much of a choice."

I don't feel that I need to make my case clearer than so. There is a difference in creating articles based on, or, around race that actually doesn't offend anyone like: "Best Black Actors / Best White Actors", and "Wrong race to play a certain character in a book that is of different ethnicity".

But this article above, is simply keeping racism alive with what it is saying, and is disrespecting both parties involved, something I can't look past.

-1st quote

Like I mentioned in my first statement, he provides context for that via sociological research from certain universities:

"What has been called the Racial Empathy Gap in various sociological studies conducted by researchers..."

-2nd quote

Given the 'we' portion of that one, I'd say the article creator is a black man honestly delivering his opinion on the topic (and his posture/tone of that answer displays self-restraint to me).

-"But this article above, is simply keeping racism alive with what it is saying, and is disrespecting both parties involved, something I can't look past."

I'm not sure what else to tell except that racism will still be alive and pervasive with or without this opinion piece. Heck, it's impossible to imagine Red Tails, featuring an all-black group of pilots for most of the film, happening had Lucas not have his own independent production company. There's a very slight chance Hollywood would've ever bitten on that by itself, and this piece is trying to explain the why of that.

To be honest with you, my problem with the article is not because of what it means, my problem is how it explains itself.

-Saying that a majority of white people don't like black movies. Like what the f*** is that all about? Statistics is one thing, but to flat out offend a skin color, is something completely different.

-Also, saying that Black people like white movies because there is no other option? Yet again, it is written in a very offensive way.

It's crazy to see you defending this article, as blatantly racism as it is, and like I said, I take offense because of the way it is written, that is all.

-"-Saying that a majority of white people don't like black movies. Like what the f*** is that all about? Statistics is one thing, but to flat out offend a skin color, is something completely different."

I don't really see much of an offense there. The Racial Empathy Gap is used to bolster that context. ie I'm not black, making it tougher to directly relate with X black protagonist, leaving me with a greater possibility of not liking it. His evidence is bolstered but the behind-the-scenes screening of "Nothin' but a Man."

-"Also, saying that Black people like white movies because there is no other option? Yet again, it is written in a very offensive way."

You've already brought this quote up. As you can see from my previous example (Red Tails) or simply looking at the stats for black main characters in film OUTSIDE of their use for stereotypical jokes and such is rather slim. That "offensive" statement would be regarded as a stern, honest stance by most movie critics.

-"It's crazy to see you defending this article, as blatantly racism as it is, and like I said, I take offense because of the way it is written, that is all."

Defending an article exploring prevalent racial issues in the film industry, yet get tagged as defending "blatantly racist" material.
