Jack Reacher Car Chase: “If the Camera Wasn’t in Danger, the Shot Wasn't Worth Doing”

VaRaces: "A new car chase featurette video looks at Tom’s prowess behind the wheel in some behind the scenes footage of the chase, proficiently powersliding and performing handbrake turns in the substantial slab of American muscle all by himself : "We had a car chase with one great resource - an actor who is a professional driver," director Christopher McQuarrie explains. “If the camera wasn’t in danger, the shot wasn’t worth doing.” We here at VaRaces approve of that mentality."

I've seen behind the scenes of several movies where they absolutely destroy so many cameras. I forget what movie it was, but in ONE shot they destroyed 4 high end cameras and didn't care lol

Imagine it as a indie film maker, you mess up just a lens and you feel screwed. But also imagine what they do, taking all the precautions to make sure the camera is safe. If Hollywood did that, perhaps lower budgets would appear.

Yeah there is a great potential for wasting cash on these big hollywood productions.

I'm a great fan of classic Hong Kong action movies and they usually had very small budgets, but still managed to outdo their hollywood equivalents by just being ingenious and imaginative...

It's not like its hard lol. They have lenes these days where you could be several yards away from the shot, but zoom in like the camera is right there without losing picture quality at all. Its how they do conversation scenes without putting cameras right up against their faces.

It can't be that hard to find ways to prevent big expensive cameras from getting destroyed. They even have Go Pro style cameras to fit into places now.

Classic Hong Kong movies are amazing. The talent pool during the 80's was outstanding as well. There were so many actors/actress that could not only act, but were able to do physical action as well.

I learned a lot from Bey Logan's commentary in the Dragon Dynasty dvds. Good stuff. :)

I miss the classic Kung Fu movies. The scenes was long as hell. Now the scenes are like 2 minutes.

That's a pretty awesome philosophy for car chase scenes.

Ballooning budget is ballooning budget without release

I have a feeling that this movie is better than its commercials and trailers make it look out to be.
